Abstract

The main topics to be discussed in this lecture are the global spread of electricity, the threat of global warming, electricity technology that can help in the elimination of CO, and a comparison of large-scale base load electricity generating technologies.

Biography of the Presenter

Papageorgiou

Christos D. Papageorgiou is an associate professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He has been with NTUA since 1979. From 1970 to 1976, he had been a professor in the Higher School of electronics Anastasiades, which is now called the Technological University of Piraeus.

Prof. Papageorgiou graduated from the National Technical University of Athens, electrical and mechanical engineering, in 1966. He received his Ph.D. Degree from the Imperial College of London University in 1979.

In his professional career, Prof. Papageorgiou held several important managerial positions including, Chairman and President of Hellenic Railways, Chairman and President of Olympic Airways, Chairman of Pyrkal, which is the major Greek defense industry, Chairman of "General Warehouses" of the National Bank of Greece, and Chairman of Veravia, a private express freight commuter airline.

Prof. Papageorgiou's research and academic interests include renewable energy, Solar Chimney technology (www.floatingsolarchimney.gr),electromagnetism and quantum mechanics, philosophy and history. He is the inventor of the "Floating Solar Chimney", which was patented in 2003.
