The island of Corfu is known to locals as Kerkyra, a name given to the island in legend by the ancient Greek god of water, Poseidon. Cultures other than ancient Greece have also left their mark on the island during its thousands of years of continuous history, evidenced by Byzantine churches and the popularity of cricket among islanders. Visitors more moved by natural splendour will find plenty to satisfy. Three million evergreen olive trees make Corfu by far the greenest island in the Mediterranean, and boat rides on both the eastern and western shores provide their own unique pleasures. At the top of Mount Pantocrator, you can enjoy breathtaking views of other Greek islands, on clear days even seeing the coast of Italy! The highlight of any trip to Greece is the food, and your best memories will be in the tavernas, savouring culinary delights that will bring you joy to last a lifetime.
