Fundamentals of Color Image Processing
Color perception plays an important role in object recognition and scene understanding both for humans and intelligent vision systems. Recent advances in digital color imaging and computer hardware technology have led to an explosion in the use of color images in a variety of applications including medical imaging, content-based image retrieval, biometrics, watermarking, digital inpainting, remote sensing, digital multimedia, and visual quality inspection. As a result, automated processing and analysis of color images has become an active area of research, which is witnessed by the large number of publications during the past two decades.
The multivariate nature of color image data presents new challenges for researchers and practitioners as the numerous methods developed for single channel images are often not directly applicable to multichannel images.
This tutorial aims to cover the early stages of the color image processing pipeline.

This tutorial is intended for researchers and practitioners with background in general signal/image processing. Due to increased interest in color image processing both in the academia and industry, we expect that this tutorial will be of great interest to the participants of SIP 2011.
Qualifications of the Instructor(s)
M. Emre Celebi received his B.Sc. Degree in Computer Engineering from the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey) in 2002. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington (Arlington, TX, USA) in 2003 and 2006, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor and the founding director of the Image Processing and Analysis Laboratory in the Department of Computer Science at the Louisiana State University in Shreveport.
Dr. Celebi has actively pursued research in the field of image processing and analysis with an emphasis on medical image analysis and color image processing. He has worked on several projects funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published over 90 articles in premier journals and conference proceedings. His research contributions are covered in two recent books published by Wiley Interscience: Image Processing - Principles and Applications (Acharya and Ray, 2005) and Clustering (Xu and Wunsch, 2009). His recent research is funded by grants from the NSF and Louisiana Board of Regents.
Dr. Celebi is an editorial board member of 9 international journals, reviews for over 50 international journals, and served on the program committee of more than 50 international conferences. He has been invited as speaker to several colloquia, workshops, and conferences, is the organizer of several workshops, and the editor of several journal special issues and books. He is a senior member of the IEEE and SPIE.
