David Vincent is Professor of Social History and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Strategy Planning and External Affairs) at The Open University, United Kingdom. He holds responsibilities for funding council and governmental liaison, the University’s strategic development, for liaison with national funding bodies, and for international policy.
Prior to this appointment he was successively lecturer, senior lecturer, and professor in history, Dean of Humanities, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Keele University. From 1994–2003 he had responsibility for the University’s academic strategy.
He is a Visiting Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford and President of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities.
He is the author or editor of fifteen books and numerous articles on British and European social history. His publications include: Bread, Knowledge and Freedom: A Study of Nineteenth Century Working Class Autobiography (Europa, London 1979, Methuen paperback 1982); with John Burnett and David Mayall, The Autobiography of the Working Class. An Annotated Critical Bibliography. 3 Vols (Harvester, Brighton; New York University Press 1983, 1987, 1988); Literacy and Popular Culture. England 1750–1914 (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1989, paperback 1993); The Culture of Secrecy: Britain 1832–1998 (Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1998); The Rise of Mass Literacy: Reading and Writing in Modern Europe (Polity Press, Cambridge; Blackwell Publishers Inc., Malden MA, 2000).
