Nowadays, we are facing the serious energy crisis which not only impacts economics, society and development of the country, but also results in the global warming. To enhance the security of energy in the country, the promotion of use of renewable energy sources is an important strategy. Photovoltaic and wind power have been receiving special attention because they are environmentally friendly and they do not emit greenhouse gases. This results in the high penetration of such renewable sources into electric power systems in the future. Nevertheless, the power generations from wind and solar are intermittent and depend on the weather condition. These power fluctuations directly affect not only power quality such as system frequency and voltage, but also system stability and security. To control the power systems under above situation, the microgrid and smart grid have been proposed by integrating information & communication technology, renewable energy sources, control and instrumentation. This special session focuses on innovative control strategies for microgrid and smart grid systems.
