Dr. Xu obtained a Ph.D. degree (2004) in Chemical Engineering from University of Western Ontario and another Ph.D. degree (1998) in Metallurgical Engineering from University of Science and Technology Beijing. Before joining Lakehead University, Dr. Xu was a Postdoctoral Fellow (2004-2005) working on oil sands bitumen upgrading at University of Alberta and Syncrude Canada Ltd.

Dr. Fernando Preto received his B.A.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. from Queen's University at Kingston.
Following graduation, he joined the Canadian Combustion Research Laboratory to pursue research on reducing emissions from combustion systems.
He has followed this up with research projects on fluidized bed combustion of biomass and waste fuels, small scale power generation from difficult fuels and thermo-chemical conversion of biomass.
He is currently Group Leader for Biomass Conversion in Natural Resources Canada's CANMET Energy Technology Centre in Ottawa.

Jane Todd has been employed by Ontario Power Generation in various capacities for 27 years. Currently her position is that of Program Manager – Northwest, encompassing Thunder Bay GS and Atikokan GS.
The Biomass Program at OPG is within her scope of work and she is currently involved in the testing of biomass at both sites and is a member of the corporate team, which is examining all aspects of biomass use within OPG including fuel supply chain, stakeholder relations, technical studies, etc.
Jane is partnering with Fossil Engineering to manage a major Safety Study of biomass use from unloading and storage through combustion. She holds a Master of Science (Chemistry) from Lakehead University, and holds the professional designations, Canadian Registered Safety Professional and Project Management Professional.
Jane is currently a member of the Professional Development Committee of the Construction Industry Institute, which is based at the University of Texas at Austin, and which works to promote a strong Project Management curriculum.
