Professor Gamal El-Din is Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, Canada. He is internationally recognized for his research in the area of water and wastewater treatment. Some of his on-going research projects include: (1) the investigation of water treatment options and their applicability to oil sands operations for the recycle and/or safe release; (2) the application of laser measurement techniques and advanced modeling techniques such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and artificial neural networks (ANN) modeling techniques for the optimization of water and wastewater treatment processes; (3) the development of different innovative designs of ozone and advanced oxidation systems for water and wastewater treatment; (4) fast kinetics/treatment mechanisms and treatability studies on the application of ozonation and advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of micropollutants such as cyanobacteria toxins, endocrine disrupting compounds, etc.; (5) the investigation of prion inactivation; and (6) the application of nanotechnology in developing innovative systems for water and wastewater treatment.
Dr. Gamal El-Din has published 72 peer-reviewed journal publications, 77 refereed conference papers, 53 conference and workshop presentations, 17 technical reports, and 7 book chapters. In 2005, he received the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award and was the recipient of the Alberta Ingenuity New Faculty Grant in Alberta.
In 2008, he was awarded one of the 2008 NSERC Accelerator Discovery Grants. Dr. Gamal El-Din has been acting as an editorial board member for the Ozone Science & Engineering Journal and has been also acting as a reviewer for many referred journals. He is a current member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), American Water Works Association (AWWA), International Water Association (IWA), International Ozone Association (IOA), International UV Association (IUVA), Water Environment Federation (WEF), Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA), and Egyptian Syndicate of Civil Engineers.
