Presentation Description
Simulations provide the user with intrinsic feedback as
they interact within a virtual reality world. The user can
explore different alternatives to accomplish a stated goal
during the simulation. Of course, by making choices, the
users also experience the consequences of the choices they
make. Given the digitized characters, different scenarios,
sounds, backgrounds, scripts, and story set up, the users
will learn how to use a compass to orient a map and find
their way around in a virtual world. The step-by-step process
demonstrates how to create a working virtual reality compass
using Macromedia Flash2004. I use symbolic simulations embedded
in an experiential simulation to create an interactive story
where the compass is used by the fictional characters and
the users who become part of the story.
Participants of this tutorial will be told what constitutes
experiential and symbolic simulations. Then they will be
given an overview of what Macromedia Flash is and how it
is used to create web based instruction to create simulations.
After being shown a computer demonstration of the virtual
reality compass embedded within an interactive story, the
instructor will walk the students through the step-by-step
process of creating the digital model of a compass and have
the participants go through these steps.
The participants will be able to create and set multiple
bearings using a virtual reality compass after going through
the step-by-step process of creating the compass:
Background
Knowledge Expected of Participants
The intended audience is educators, interactive storytellers,
and trainers who are interested in building realistic 2D
and 3D models to facilitate learning in a digital experiential
simulations environment. There are no prerequisites. However,
some hands-on experience with Macromedia Flash will increase
the overall understanding of the process used to create
virtual world models.
