"Web-based 3D Collaborative
Virtual Environments in Education"

Web-based 3D Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVEs) have
been widely used in educational settings of different types.
They have been adopted for their ability to provide a social
arena where students and teachers can meet overcoming the
barriers of the physical world. 3D CVEs have also been used
for the purposes of simulation and demonstration of scientific
concepts, art, history exhibitions, etc, which for practical
reasons may be complicated in real-life classrooms. The
goal of this session is to address a number of issues in
connection with the design and deployment of 3D educational
CVEs. The relevant topics include (but are not restricted
to): the didactical value of 3D CVEs, virtual campuses and
classrooms, virtual labs and museums for education, socializing
and community building in virtual worlds, designing user-friendly
CVEs, current technology challenges.
Dr.
Ekaterina Prasolova-Førland obtained her
PhD in Computer Science from the Norwegian University of
Science and Technology. She is currently a postdoctoral
fellow at the same university. Her research interests include
educational and social aspects of 3D Collaborative Virtual
Environments and virtual universities.
