Abstract:
This tutorial will present a practical view of the issues that researchers face in adapting scanning probe lithography approaches to problems associated with biomedical applications. The scanning probe lithography strategies that will be discussed will be geared towards the following areas of research and development: biosensors, microtechnology, BioMEMS, Lab-on-a-Chip, biomaterials, bio-nanotechnology, molecular and cellular engineering, and tissue engineering. The course will aim to accomplish the following objectives:

    1) Describe a historical overview of scanning probe lithography techniques.
    2) Outline a methodology to perform each type of lithography method.
    3) Present examples of patterning of biological and biologically active molecules.
    4) Present examples of patterning of various organic and inorganic molecules.
    5) Explain in detail the biomedical engineering applications of each lithography method.
    6) State advantages and disadvantages of each lithographic procedure in the context of biomedical applications.
    7) Outline future challenges in adapting each lithography method for advanced biomedical applications

Background Knowledge Expected of Participants
No special background of the participants will be expected. A familiarity with basic engineering principles, physics, calculus, chemistry, and biology is needed to follow the tutorial.

Biography of the Presenter
Albena Ivanisevic is an Assistant Professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Chemistry at Purdue University. She is the PI of a research group at Purdue University that works on building and evaluating chemical and biological architectures using scanning probe techniques. She has extensive experience in each of the topics of this tutorial. The instructor has published more than 20 papers in this area and has taught numerous similar tutorials in the last 5 years.
