Abstract
There is now major interest in developing computer/communication
networks that use awareness of the context in which they
operate and of the capabilities of the network infrastructure
that they utilise to dynamically provide the best possible
quality of service. These systems are known as Autonomic
and Situated Communication Systems and they have attracted
significant attention from the European Union's FP6 program.
The Cognitive Packet Network (CPN) project at Imperial College
is a leader in this area and has been funded by the Engineering
and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) of the United
Kingdom. Our presentation will detail the main principles
of this project and the experimental results we have obtained.
Biography
Erol
Gelenbe is the Professor in the Dennis Gabor Chair
at Imperial College. A native of Turkey, he graduated from
the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. His research
has addressed different facets of probabilistic models in
the computer and information sciences, ranging from automata
theory, computer system performance evaluation, databases,
neural networks, queueing theory, and computer network protocols.
He is a Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and the IEE, and also a Member
of Academia Europaea. He has been awarded honorary doctorates
and scientific prizes in Belgium, Italy, and Turkey, and
has received government honours from France and Italy.
