The increasing complexity and QoS requirements of multimedia Internet traffic are stretching established routing algorithms to their limits and beyond. Shortcomings such as sub-optimality and lack of flexibility of existing routing protocols are clear enough, but what are the alternatives? There is no shortage of theoretical solutions but most are impractical. They are either too complex for real-time implementation or require a form of centralized control that fails to reflect the distributed nature of Internet routing. The transition from the drawing board to production routers is difficult. Add in modern security requirements and the heterogeneous nature of today's systems and existing routing protocols begin to look very primitive. Where will the next generation of Internet routing protocols come from? Should we look to ant colony optimisation, active routers, IPvN(N>6)¡¦? What's it to be? This session aims to discuss the latest advances and proposals in Internet routing with a particular emphasis on practical implementation on production routers.

Vic Grout was awarded the BSc(Hons) degree in mathematics and computing from the University of Exeter (UK) in 1984 and the PhD degree in communication engineering from Plymouth Polytechnic (UK) in 1988. He has worked in senior positions in both academia and industry for twenty years and has published and presented over 90 research papers. He is currently a Reader in Computer Science at the University of Wales NEWI, Wrexham in the UK. His research interests span several areas of computational mathematics, particularly the application of heuristic principles to large-scale problems in network design and management such as routing and filtering. Dr. Grout is a Chartered Engineer, Scientist and Mathematician and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), British Computer Society (BCS) and Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). He chairs the biennial international conference series on Internet Technologies and Applications.
